Iceland Airwaves Music Festival, Oct. 12-16

Since 1999, the Iceland Airwaves music festival has brought premier music from Iceland, Europe, North America, and across the world to downtown Reykjavík. Like SXSW in Austin, Texas, Airwaves hosts shows at clubs and venues around the city. In recent years, they've brought top Icelandic acts like Sigur Rós, FM Belfast, and GusGus, alongside International musicians like The Shins, TV on the Radio, Hot Chip, Florence + the Machine, and the Flaming Lips.

This year's lineup includes American headliners John Grant and the tUnE-yArDs, and other North American acts like Beach House, James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem), Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr, and Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band. Scandinavian bands on the bill include Niki & the Dove, GusGus, Just Another Snake Cult, Kira Kira, Lára Rúnars, Treefight for Sunlight, and many, many more. Check out the entire artist lineup HERE.

Check out this little guy! What a creative way to grow herbs or small flowers using an eggshell as biodegradable planter.

It is all very simple: Fill the egg shell with potting soil, add the seeds of your choice and water. Make sure to keep the seeds nice and wet for optimal growth. If you want to make things a bit more advanced, you can paint a funny face on the shell and decorate as you wish. When the plants get too big for the shells, you can transplant them straight to the soil, shell and all.

About the design:

The area is characterized by residential buildings from 1900-1950. As a requirement from the local authority, the kindergarten is to have a contemporary expression. With its location in the middle of a small city park, the kindergarten has an outdoor area that is protected like an enclosed garden. The planning solution enables the 4 kindergarten units to function both independently and together as required. All units share a common area and a kitchen in the heart of the building. Administration is placed on the upper floor separate from children areas.

The Finnish capital, Helsinki, which is under consideration for a satellite Guggenheim museum, has been named World Design Capital 2012 by the Montreal-based International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID).

Appointed to cities based on their accomplishments and commitment to design as an effective tool for social, cultural and economic development, the WDC designation is an ambitious project initiated and managed by Icsid to promote the impact of design on quality of life.

According to the ICSID website, "For the City of Helsinki, design has for decades been a pivotal enabler to building an open city. The concept of 'Embedded Design' has tied design to innovation and has enabled desirable solutions that have addressed the needs of its inhabitants.

Helsinki is a vibrant community - a great place to work, live and explore. SOHL: Leather Designed with Plants from the Swedish Country-Side

I'm captivated by Swedish leather artist Carina Sohl who specializes in hand-embossed patterns on leather, using wild plants from the Swedish country-side.
"I live in the country, close to nature and to the plants that I hand-pick for my patterns..."

”Nature creates perfect works of art, and I want to convey the sense of humbleness that I feel before nature and living plants."

Sohl's designs are based off different shapes and select leaves that together create a harmonious pattern. Instead of painting with a brush and paint, she designs with natural leaves. The organic materials form irregular, beautiful and vibrant patterns which are all unique.

"The handcrafting process is complicated, demands time and love, and only allows small quantities. If you look very closely you will see the small fine veins and shapes of the different leaves, with folded corners or wormholes. I want to freeze a moment of this beauty, and when I design my patterns with leaves and press them into the leather, an exact detailed embossment is formed, which will become integrated in the leather forever.”

The artistic designs cannot be compared with conventional machine-embossed leather, as creating patterns with natural plants requires a completely different kind of artistic and craft process, allowing only for one-of-a-kind-pieces.

In the process the leaf will be destroyed, therefore each pattern will be unique and a highly individual piece of art. Absolutely stunning.

Scandinavian Wooden Heart Tutorial

Design Sponge recently posted a lovely tutorial on how to make a simple, Scandinavian wall hanging. And since we're a sucker for simplistic design, we had to share with you.
Take a look:
This simple balsa-wood heart is inspired by the minimalist, nature-inspired interiors I’ve been admiring lately, like the ones I imagine Kim Krans of The Wild Unknown might possess. This heart is so, so easy to make and very versatile for display around the home. Stick it to a wall, hang it in a corner, prop it on a shelf — it’s pretty easy to make use of it. I hope you have as much fun with it as I did. Enjoy! — Kate
DIY DIRECTIONS AFTER THE JUMP!

Materials
* two balsa-wood strips (1/32″ x 2″ x 35″)
* wood stain
* foam brush for staining
* hot-glue gun
* scissors

Instructions
1. Remove stickers and any sticky residue from the balsa strips and stain one side of each strip. Be careful not to let any stain drip over the edges or get on the other side of the wood, and leave the strips in a well-ventilated place until the stain is completely dry.

Note: You’ll notice that in my process shots, the wood is not stained. This is because I decided to stain at the end, so I could see what the heart looked like completely untreated. If you are sure you want to stain, it’s best to do this step before assembly; however, if you want to wait to make the decision, it is relatively easy to stain the interior of the heart once you’ve assembled it.

2. Take one strip and gently pull one edge until it overlaps the other edge, forming a teardrop shape out of the strip. You want the edges to be almost exactly perpendicular to each other when they overlap, but then pushed to a slightly more acute angle, as you can see here. Put a big dab of hot glue between the edges, then press firmly and hold until the glue sets. Repeat with the second strip.

3. Once both strips are in identical teardrop shapes, hold them so that their bases overlap (similar to the way you assembled the strips in step 2). The right side of the left teardrop and the left side of the right teardrop should overlap each other and form a straight line until the shapes begin to curve away, forming a heart shape.

4. While holding the heart shape in place, put a dab of hot glue between the two bases and pinch firmly while the glue sets. Now your heart shape is firmly adhered and cannot be adjusted.

5. Snip off the overlapping edges with a sharp pair of scissors to clean up the bottom edge of the heart shape. If they fray a bit, you can easily clean up the edges with a fine-grit sandpaper.

6. Now your heart is ready to hang or prop up for display. The piece is so lightweight that you can attach it to a wall with adhesive or sticky glue dots, but if you wish to make the display more permanent, you can use a very tiny tack or nail through the base to hold it in place. You can also hang the heart or prop it up on a tabletop or shelf for a simple, modern display.

Another great home from Sköna Hem, shot by Madeleine Söder and styled by Linda Åhman. This is the home of Norwegian ceramist Maria Øverbye, located in Oslo.
Maria lives here with her husband and three daughters and has her studio in the basement where she creates her art; odd little creatures made of plaster and metal wire.

The house was originally built as a school in 1893, and the Øverbye family resides on the 95 sqm top floor which they renovated but left some areas raw and unfinished. The house feels very personal thanks to all the little vignettes that Maria makes all over the house, and the photos and prints adds warmth and interest to the white walls.

The Walking House

Danish artist collective N55 has constructed a mobile microdwelling known as the "Walking House".

As you might have expected, the interior of this mobile home is quite minimalist. There's little more than a built-in platform for sleeping and a sink.

A touchscreen interface allows for control of walking direction and speed. The designers hope to to add GPS navigation, a roof deck, extra interior storage, and a bathroom module.

The Swedish furniture giant announced it’s partnership today with Stockholm-based O2 to oversee the construction and maintenance of a nine-turbine wind farm slated to be completed in 2012.

At full capacity the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 17 IKEA stores in Sweden.

Owning a wind farm in Sweden will enable IKEA to further its ultimate goal of running on 100 percent renewable energy to power, heat, and cool its facilities in Sweden.

I always get a kick out of infographics. I mean... pretty pictures + interesting statistics = easily absorbable data that's fun to look at. What's not to like? They could make an infographic explaining the molecular structure of different types of farts and I would get excited.

Danish designer Peter Orntoft doesn't exactly make infographics, his work is more like infophotgraphy. Orntoft uses actual people and tangible objects to share data instead of designed graphics. It's truly captivating!

The ancient gardening secret inspired Lovberg to develop a way to help gardeners around the world put the nitrogen-rich power of urine to work in their gardens.

Part chamber pot and part watering can, the patented Guldkannan Towa is ergonomically designed to be comfortable to sit on. Capable of holding as much as 10 liters of “liquid gold,” it seals tightly to keep the urine's nitrogen as well as odors contained inside. Gardeners need only dilute the resulting urine with water and apply to their soil for yields as much as seven times higher than would be achieved without fertilizer.

Pee and plant. Now, that's what we call becoming one with nature!

Copenhagen Ski Slope Waste-to-Energy Plant via BIG

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) announced their creative ski slope design for a waste-to-energy plant located in Copenhagen.
The idea was simple: why just create something that can transform garbage in electricity when you can add a touristic feature to the building.

The ski slope was designed by Topotek 1 & Man Made Landand and will start on the highest point of the building. There will be no snow on the slope, designers thinking it would be better to have a “recycled synthetic granular” material that will have many of the snow’s properties.

Reaching the peak of the building will be available for skiing enthusiasts via a special elevator. The exterior of the building will be made from a modular grid of planters and windows that will give the infrastructure a nice mountain look.
This just proves that if you put a little effort and add some imagination to your projects... anything is possible.

The Art Of The Danish Open-Face Sandwich

The origin of the open-face sandwich is the European Middle Ages, "when thick slices of stale bread, or trenchers, served as plates. The trenchers absorbed the juice and flavor of the toppings and then were discarded. Over time, the bread was incorporated into the meal because the food-soaked "plate" was often the tastiest component."

Leave it to the Danes to elevate the open-face sandwich to an art form. Smorrebrod, which translates as "butter bread," includes countless open-face sandwich combinations, from minimal to lavish. How they are assembled varies with the occasion. However, they share a specific preparation method and order in which they are eaten. They also share ingredients that reflect straightforward Scandinavian sensibilities, using simple, honest, local food attractively presented with little waste. This is as close to ceremony as you will find in the easygoing Danish culture.

A Lesson in Smorrebrod Etiquette:

* Smorrebrod is eaten in only one order: Herring first, followed by other fish, then meat, then cheese.
* Before adding a topping, smear the bread with butter or duck fat.
* Use only rye bread with herring.
* Do not eat with your hands; only a knife and fork will do.
* Toast frequently. Not only is this expected, but if you are a smorrebrod rookie, this will calm your nerves and ensure that your table companions will not be inclined to remember your gaffes.

Norwegian Boy Saved by Creed

Here's a crazy story for you:
Walter Eikrem, a 13-year-old Norwegian boy was walking home from school when he came across a pack of wolves. "At first, I thought it might have been the neighbor's dogs," Walter told a Norwegian TV station after the incident. But this was no pack of domesticated canines, this was a poop-your-pants kind of nightmare.

Fighting the rush of adrenaline, Walter stayed calm and thought about his mother's advice never to run away from wild animals. So he stood his ground and figured he might be able to scare the animals off with the music from his cell phone. He quickly grabbed his phone, pulled the earbuds from the jack and blasted Creed's Christian rock anthem "Overcome."

Walter waved his arms wildly and screamed at the top of his lungs along with the music, and thankfully, it worked! The pack backed down and went the other way. Creed saved the day! [Der Spiegel]

Human heat is a pretty powerful thing. Aside from curing hypothermia and keeping energy bills low in households that cuddle for warmth, it can be used to heat buildings.
In Stockholm Central Station, over 250,000 commuters pass through the station each day - it's the busiest train station in northern Europe. And 250,000 bodies can generate a lot of heat!
The way is works is excess heat in the station can be extracted through heat exchangers in a ventilation system. This ventilation system can also provide air conditioning. The excess heat in the ventilators gets converted into hot water. Then, if that already wasn't enough, the water gets pumped to the building close to the train station to serve as a part of its heat supply. The office blocks saves up to 25% on energy bills from the human heat provided by the commuters.

You Deserve a Treat: Scandinavian Spiced Cake

Scandinavian Spiced Cake via Mila's Daydreams

Scandinavian food is usually mild and spiceless, but not this cake. The aroma of this cake is intoxicating. This traditional spice cake is great treat with the coffee and it's so easy to make. You need only one bowl to mix.

Dry ingredients:
2 dl Dark Farin sugar (Brown sugar)
0.5 dl White sugar (Or just 1.5 dl white sugar with 1 dl brown syrup. Mix syrup with liquids)
4.5 dl Flour
1 ts baking soda
1 ts baking powder (ground spices into a fine powder)
2 ts Cardamom
2 ts Cinnamom
2 ts Ginger
2 ts Clove
1 ts Allspice (Pimenta dioica)
1 ts Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)
2 tbls Dark cacao powder
1/2 ts salt
(*ts = teaspoon, tbls. dl = deciliter)

Liquids:
2 dl Buttermilk or yogurt
2 eggs
1 dl Coconut Oil (Good quality.) Other veggie oils are ok too, and definitely more "scandinavian style", but I love cold pressed coconut oil. Even if you hate coconut smell and taste, from these flavors it won't pop up.

Mix all dry ingredients well in big bowl with the wooden fork or spoon. And then, add all room temperature "liquids" once, and mix them well with the dry ingredients, but don't whip them too much. You just need to get smooth dough. Room temperature is really important with the coconut oil. If the dough is too cold, it solidifies. If that happen, don't worry. This cake is pretty much impossible to ruin. Just place your bowl over hot water bath and mix even. Pour into oiled cake mold and bake in the oven 175° (celsius, it's about 350° in fahrenheit) 45 minutes.

And here comes the hardest part: Turn mold over and let the cake settle . I know, I know, you would love to eat it right away, but it's better when it's cooled down

Tip for measure conversions:
American1 cup = 8 fl oz = 2.4 dl = 24 cl = 240 ml
British1 cup = 10 fl oz = 2.8 dl = 280 ml
dl 1 deciliter = 6 (scant) tablespoons

Skånemejerier, a relatively small diary producer based in southern Sweden, had a long local history without much competition. That changed a few years ago, when a larger, national diary producer set its eye on southern Sweden, pricing its products aggressively to capture market share. In response, Skånemejeriet is trying to revive its relationship with its customers by stressing its local roots and connections to the community.

The plan...
Skånemejeriet created a web page and an iPhone app; both allow customers to enter numbers from a milk carton's date stamp to learn about the local farmer who produced the milk. Ingenious! The numerical code used to relay information to consumers is the standard tracking stamp that the company already used. So for the cost of building an iPhone app and a online application, the company is able to give customers that "still-made-here" feeling, helping it compete with larger national brands.

CristalBubble´s shape was voluntarily designed with the goal to offer a dreamy space without disturbing the nature and the environment. The hut and its walls were reduced at their minimum. In a recent interview with Dazed Digital, Malin seems like a tender little angel but her music makes for a dark and delicious dancefloor. The film "Simple Simon" has been chosen as Sweden's official nomination to the Best Foreign Film award at next year's Oscar's awards. The film, called "I rymden finns inga känslor" (There are no feelings in space) in Swedish, only had its premiere in the Swedish cinemas last week.

“Simple Simon” is the story of 18 year-old Simon, a boy with Asperger’s syndrome whose life is turned upside-down when his brother Sam is dumped by his girlfriend. Alic apparently designs the the pieces with themes of illusion and a ‘lack of function’ in order to awake the viewer’s curiosity and to show jewellery in new value contexts…

An approach that clearly works - I’m captivated.

Deadwood Design

Uhtua Design is a new deadwood furniture collection by Finnish designer, Huliswood Oy. Huliswood has a long experience in using deadwood as a building material, but this is the first time it is being used for furniture.

Deadwood comes from old pine trees that have dried standing and shed their bark. They're typically gray on the surface and have a reddish color on the inside. In the north, trees stop growing at the age of 300-400 years. It takes a few decades for them to dry standing, after which they may still stand for hundreds of years.

RECIPE: Simple Danish Puff

Here's a tasty lil recipe to try over the weekend.
{What you will need}
Top:

1/2 cup butter
1 cup water
1 cup flour
1 tsp almond extract
3 eggs
Frosting

Bottom:

1 cup flour
1/2 cup butter
2 tsp water

Click for baking instructions after the jump!

{Preparation Instructions}
Bottom:

Measure flour into bowl and cut in butter until finely blended
Add the water and mix to a paste
Round into ball, divide in half
Pat into 2 long strips (at least 12x3”) on ungreased baking sheet

Top:

Mix butter and water in saucepan on stove. Bring to a rolling boil.
Add extract and remove from heat
Stir in flour and mix until smooth and thick
Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition, until smooth
Divide in half, spread evenly over each piece of pastry
Bake for 60 minutes at 350 degrees F
Cool completely before spreading frosting on top

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. All you have to do is attach a hubcap like device called The Copenhagen Wheel to your bike and you can immediately transform an ordinary bicycle into a hybrid e-bike that also acts as a mobile sensing unit. Sounds like something Inspector Gadget would drive!
The Copenhagen Wheel stores the energy created while cycling and braking and with a click of a switch you can use stored power to give yourself a bit of a boost. (perfect for hills!) It also maps pollution levels, traffic congestion, and road conditions in real-time and transports it to your iPhone. Wild!

The exhibition located in Midtown Manhattan houses 41 objects by 35 Nordic designers, including furniture, architectural models, photos, lighting and textiles.

The exhibition is curated by the internationally renowned architecture firm Snøhetta, which also designed the installation, in collaboration with Situ Studio. The first in a series of programs marking the ASF’s centennial, Nordic Models + Common Ground offers a visionary look at contemporary Nordic art and design, examining nascent trends and their impact on the global art and design communities. All of the Nordic countries—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden—are represented.

How to Make Meads (aka Viking Juice)

The fall season brings many novelties out of their summer hibernation: scarves, boots, gloves, layers, and one of my favorites, meads.

What are Meads?

Some people call it Honey Wine or Viking Juice, either way, it’s absolutely delicious. It’s an alcoholic beverage ranging from 10% up to 20% or more made from two simple ingredients- honey and water. It’s typically non-carbonated taste makes it ultra smooth when it barrels down your throat, however it can be carbonated or sparkling with different varieties.

Depending on local traditions and specific recipes, it may be brewed with spices, fruits, or grain mash. It may be produced by fermentation of honey with grain mash or can be flavored with hops for a more beer-like flavor. Don’t for a second think that this is a new trendy drink, meads have been around since year 1700. In fact it’s the world's oldest fermented beverage with one of the oldest references dating back to the Hindu’s of India’s holy Veda books. However the Nordic or “Northern Gods” are the ones who truly perfected it and brought out it’s popularity.

Their original recipe was based on a goat by the name of Heidrun who lived on top of the roof Valhalla, who’s udder flowed with unlimited supplies of this most delicious drink. But the oldest known recipe for mead to be written down in the Nordic countries was in 1520 by the Archbishop Olaus Magnus. The recipe comprised of water, honey, hops and brewers yeast, and concludes that “on the eight day may be drunk, but the longer it is left, the purer and better it will be.”

Here’s all you’ll need…

Special Equipment: 1 gallon/ 4 liter (or larger) ceramic crock, wide mouth jar, or plastic bucket. 1 gallon/ 4 liter glass jug (the kind you can buy apple juice in) Airlock (From a local beer and wine supply shop. $1.)

Ingredients: 3 cups local honey 12 cups purified water

Process:

1. Mix water and honey in the crock or jar. Stir well, until the honey is dissolved. Cover with a towel and set aside in a warm room for a couple days. Stir twice a day.

2. After 3 to 4 days, the brew should be bubbly and fragrant. Now transfer the wine into a clean glass jug. You can add water and honey in a 4:1 ratio to fill. (3 cups honey and 12 cups water in a 1 gallon jug works perfect.) Cork with an airlock. This lets the air out but not the air in. You can also use a balloon keeping air out without holding pressure in.

3. Leave for 2-4 weeks, until bubbling slows.

4. Build a bonfire outside and drink with cute girls (or guys) until you become a Viking warrior, or princess.

The Raveonettes are the Danish alternative rock duo of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo. Best known for their shoegazing, surf-style, garage rock, the duo's music couples two-part harmonies with 50's and 60's inspired electric guitar. While their music is upbeat, their lyrics are deceptively dark. The Raveonettes have a knack for making their songs sound both dirty and sweet simultaneously.

Ladies and Gentleman - A Rubber Gorilla

This amazing work of art by sculptor Villu Jaanisoo, entitled "Kaikki on mahdollista" (Everything is Possible, 2009) is a gigantic gorilla made from second-hand car tires. The sculpture won an invitational art competition arranged by the State Art Collection, which operates in conjunction with the Arts Council of Finland. It is located on Viikinkaari and the University of Helsinki’s science library can be seen in the background.
